At a large, fast-moving international hub like LAX, assisted ambulatory and wheelchair transportation is not a convenience, it is an essential service for thousands of passengers every day. With long walking distances, crowded terminals, security checkpoints, and frequent inter-terminal connections, navigating the airport can be physically demanding even for healthy travelers. For individuals with limited mobility, chronic medical conditions, temporary injuries, or age-related challenges, professional mobility assistance is often the difference between a manageable and an overwhelming journey.
Demand for these services continues to grow as air travel becomes more accessible to older adults and individuals managing long-term health conditions. Many travelers are capable of short walks but cannot safely traverse the extensive distances common in major airports. Assisted ambulatory support allows these passengers to maintain independence while reducing fatigue, injury risk, and travel-related stress. Wheelchair services similarly provide critical mobility for passengers who cannot walk long distances or navigate crowded environments on their own.
Beyond comfort, assisted mobility services play a vital role in safety and operational flow. By ensuring passengers receive timely, structured assistance, airports reduce the risk of falls, missed flights, medical incidents, and congestion at critical choke points such as security and boarding areas. The presence of trained mobility staff also improves coordination with airlines, TSA, and ground transportation providers, helping the airport function smoothly even during peak travel periods.
Assisted ambulatory and wheelchair transportation supports travelers throughout the entire airport experience, not just at the aircraft door. These services provide seamless movement from curbside drop-off through check-in, security screening, gate areas, terminal connections, baggage claim, and onward ground transportation. By offering trained personnel and appropriate mobility equipment, airports like LAX ensure passengers can move efficiently and safely through every phase of travel, regardless of physical limitation.
At an airport the size and complexity of LAX, these services are fundamental infrastructure — enabling millions of passengers each year to travel with confidence, comfort, and respect, while ensuring the airport remains efficient, compliant, and responsive to the needs of a diverse traveling public.
Wheelchair assistance is requested through the airline, not directly through the airport. The airline is responsible for coordinating and providing mobility assistance from curbside through the terminal, and again on arrival.
Passengers can request wheelchair assistance at the time of booking their flight, either online or by phone, by selecting wheelchair or mobility assistance as a special service. This request is then attached to the passenger’s reservation and communicated to airport service teams. Travelers can also add or confirm the request later by calling the airline directly, and it is strongly recommended to do so at least 48–72 hours before travel to ensure availability.
On the day of travel, assistance can begin as early as curbside drop-off. Airline-contracted mobility staff will meet you or your loved one upon arrival via MedSafe to provide a wheelchair to transfer into to travel throughout LAX. An airline scort can assist you through check-in, TSA security screening, and onward to the gate. For passengers who can walk short distances but need help over longer stretches, assisted ambulatory support may be provided instead of full wheelchair use.
Wheelchair assistance continues during connecting flights or terminal changes, which is especially important at LAX due to long walking distances and inter-terminal transfers. Upon arrival, the service resumes at the aircraft door, assisting the passenger from the plane to baggage claim and then to curbside pickup where MedSafe staff will be awaiting your return.
If you arrive at LAX without a pre-arranged request, they can still ask for wheelchair assistance at the airline check-in counter or gate. While airlines will make reasonable efforts to accommodate same-day requests, availability may be limited during peak travel periods, which is why advance notice is always encouraged.

MedSafe is there to assist your NEMT at LAX, area hotels, restaurants, and visitor attractions.
